after the top of the hour. the election of barak obama guarantees four more years of government growth, many say. that's mostly due to the landmark health care legislation, the affordable care act. as the bureaucracy gets bigger, your coverage could actually get smaller? here to help us understand the new law, betsy mccoy, author of the book" beating observe observe." you've been an advocate of explaining what observe -- obamacare is all about. >> the book is actually a no spin, easy to understand guide for people who know nothing about health insurance or health care except what they've experienced themselves. but there are big changes ahead for everybody. for example, most americans get their health insurance at work, through their own employer or their spouse's employer. but they may be losing that coverage. >> gretchen: why? >> because the law requires, being in 2014, that employers with 50 or more full-time workers, provide coverage. not just any coverage. the government mandated one size fits all plan, which will cost about twice as much as what many employers currently offer. so

. the republican . -- the republican line. caller: mr. obama, they say it is not his fault. he has had for years. he said he would cut the deficit in half. they passed the deficit a year ago, about cutting this. why is it not being cut now? i have been told both sides are not getting along, but he is the president, and he needs to lead. i do not understand how there are billions of dollars across the world to different countries. i know we do that for specific reasons, but we should be using some of that money to pay our deficits off. what i do not understand is, why are we continuing to do that, to help everybody else out and we should be taking care of our own country? host: let me show you the front page of the new york times. if we can move over -- we will move it over, here it is right here, a wide shot -- will be focusing on senator hagel in a couple of minutes and looking back at some of the things he has said over his tenure in the u.s. senate. that line from "the new york times" -- also from "the hartford courant" -- "the arizona republic repor" -- some local stories, beginning with "th

. the year rising. we are back now. i want to get your reaction, if i may, as to what is your reaction to these reports that the white house, the obama administration was cautioning the algerian government on how to respond to this hostage taking and this group of terrorists? >> i think that is probably exactly right. i think the algerians are very experienced people at fighting, and they don't give a lot of time to develop. i think it is probably very crude to say that i think the algerians value that gas production more than the people that were being held hostage. there were very worried about the plan being destroyed. i think that i why they moved right away. >> they were concerned, and i heard it in my debate. the americans and the french could do it. there was a draw fying. special forces moving. they looked very conceed that we would go in and therefore they could not absorb a politically. they went. lou: ignored by washington, european capitalists. >> what i think the algerians understood, knowing what they know about those g how this, if they don't terminate the issue very qui

his plan to curb gun violence to president obama tomorrow. one city is apparently not waiting around for washington act. chicago quickly becoming ground zero in the debate on gun control. that city saw more than 500 murders last year, prompting mayor rahm emanuel to take action with a gun control plan of his own. steve brown is live in chicago right now, but i guess mayor emanuel is not. he is in d.c. today suggesting democratic strategy to try to get gun control accomplished, is that right, steve? >> reporter: in a sense yes, it was part of the discussion at a public revent held in washington that mayor emanuel took part in. local press was made aware of it well in advance. it touches on the city's most dramatic problem which is gun violence in this city. you mentioned over 500 homicides. just this past weekend, three more homicides, two of them teachers, all gun related. emanuel suggested in the d.c. forum the best course of action for greater gun control measures is to force the house's hand. >> start in the senate. that is where you get your best leverage and clear the deck and h

be the case. we're learning president obama will hold his first news conference of his second term, certainly of the new year, 2013, that will happen 11:15 this morning in the east room. it is an open press event. perhaps the reason for this is his push on immigration. we may hear some of that at the top of this news conference what he hopes to accomplish there in terms of comprehensive immigration reform. no doubt there will be questions though about the debt ceiling and how the president expects to make up those revenues, whether he will try to do that to increase taxes one form or another. there will be a lot of questions this morning perhaps on afghanistan as well. that comes up 1:15 this morning and that comes up here on fox news. bill: you wonder if his answers parallel with what senator lee was talking about or whether they go in an entirely different direction. that is where the battle lines draw on this new term. martha: correction. this will be the last press conference of the last term because the inauguration is coming up. bill: duly noted. a week from today, "america's newsroom"

to achieve over the next four years? guest: i think it signals two things. one signals that he wants an independent, no-nonsense voice at the table on the president. senator chuck hagel has had a close relationship with president obama. and i happen to know from a number of sources that the quality of conversation, that the nature of their conversation is a very direct, often not in agreement and that the president is not bringing on board a yes man. the second thing we need to know is that we have been dealing with chuck hagel and a way that we ought to be debating the secretary of state. this will be the secretary of defense. this is about deploying power or run the world and managing strategic assets and managing a shift where the president has said that we now have or did we have overweighted our resources in the middle east and south asia and we have underweighted our presence in asia looking at china. that shift is like moving a giant ship of spending, resources, american men and women being deployed in different places, as well as strategic asset purchasing, what weapons and t

our particular feelings are. here's another question that we should be asking ourselves now. 40 years from now, historians will be looking back on our time. or 60 years from now. and what will they say about how we responded to this? it's not just about president obama. it's about all of us. >> or how we didn't respond to it. >> we're all on a dock here. and i think that's the question that we have to ask ourselves. and it has to be asked across the political and the cultural spectrum including the people who feel that they have a right to own an assault weapon and the people in their community who feel that they don't have a right to. there has to be this dialogue across the country in small western communities, in the south and in the big cities as well. as reverend al knows, there's no greater carnage from guns than in the inner cities of america. >> absolutely. >> 506 homicides last year in chicago, most of them in the inner city. >> i've just been reading about -- you all remember nickel mines, the shooting there, which was actually a handgun. it highlights -- and that was, i don
